Southeast L.A. Gateway City

Listings in Bell Gardens, CA

Welcome to Bell Gardens, a dense Southeast Los Angeles County city along the Rio Hondo, where a working-class, largely Latino community lives about 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

Bell Gardens is a compact city in Southeast Los Angeles County, set on the west bank of the Rio Hondo and framed by the Long Beach (I-710) Freeway, roughly 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The city is named for businessman James George Bell, an early landowner, while the "Gardens" portion honors the Japanese tenant farmers who cultivated vegetables and rice on the area's fields in the early 20th century. Bell Gardens remained largely agricultural until the building boom that followed World War II, when new homes filled the open fields and the community incorporated as a city on August 1, 1961. Today the city spans about two and a half square miles and ranks among the most densely populated municipalities in California. Its population is overwhelmingly Latino, and the community retains a working-class, family-oriented character shaped by generations of newcomers to Southeast Los Angeles. The city's heritage is also visible in an early adobe mansion regarded as among the oldest surviving residences in the Los Angeles area. The local economy is anchored by landmark employers and institutions. The Bicycle Hotel & Casino, one of the largest poker card rooms in the world, sits along the I-710 corridor, and DEL Records, an independent Latin music label, is headquartered in the city. Dense commercial corridors along Florence, Eastern, and Garfield avenues serve residents with an array of neighborhood restaurants, markets, and services that reflect the community's deep Mexican and Central American roots. Bell Gardens suits households seeking an urban, walkable Southeast L.A. location with direct freeway access to downtown Los Angeles, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, and the broader Gateway Cities region. Its small lots, close-knit street grid, and strong civic institutions give it a distinctive identity within the greater Los Angeles metropolis.

About Bell Gardens

Real Estate & Housing

Bell Gardens is among the most densely developed cities in California, with a housing stock built overwhelmingly during the mid-20th-century suburban expansion. Small residential lots, single-family homes from the post-war era, and multi-family apartment buildings dominate the landscape within the city's roughly two-and-a-half-square-mile footprint. The compact street grid means homes sit close together and near commercial corridors, giving the community an urban, walkable feel rather than a sprawling suburban one. The market's character reflects the city's history as a gateway community: modest, densely arranged housing that prioritizes proximity to jobs, transit, and the freeway network over large yards or estate-sized parcels.

Neighborhoods

Bell Gardens is organized around a compact grid between the Los Angeles River and the Rio Hondo, with commercial activity concentrated along major corridors such as Florence Avenue, Eastern Avenue, and Garfield Avenue. Garfield Avenue is home to the civic center and City Hall, anchoring the city's administrative core. Residential blocks radiate outward from these thoroughfares, blending older post-war homes with newer multi-family buildings. The city's density and layout create a cohesive, walkable urban fabric where homes, schools, churches, and small businesses sit within a few blocks of one another.

Lifestyle in Bell Gardens

Bell Gardens is a predominantly Latino, working-class community with a lively everyday street culture. Neighborhood taquerias, bakeries, and family-run markets line the city's commercial avenues, reflecting the community's deep Mexican and Central American roots. The presence of DEL Records, a Latin independent entertainment company, underscores the area's cultural influence in regional music. The Bicycle Hotel & Casino adds a notable entertainment anchor. Community life centers on schools, churches, and parks, and the city's density fosters a strong sense of neighborhood identity.

Schools & Education

Public education in Bell Gardens is provided by the Montebello Unified School District, which also serves Montebello, Commerce, and portions of Downey, Los Angeles, and Monterey Park. Schools located within the city include Bell Gardens Elementary, Bell Gardens Intermediate, and Bell Gardens High School. The district operates a network of elementary, intermediate, and high schools serving a large, predominantly Latino student population across Southeast Los Angeles County, with programs and campuses distributed throughout the region.

Getting Around

Bell Gardens sits directly along the Long Beach Freeway (I-710), one of the region's busiest goods-movement corridors, placing downtown Los Angeles about 10 miles to the northwest and the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to the south. The city's location provides access to the broader Southern California freeway network, including nearby I-5, I-605, and I-105. Local bus service and connecting light-rail options through the Los Angeles Metro system serve commuters, while the dense street grid supports walking and short trips within the city.

Parks & Recreation

John Anson Ford Park is the city's primary green space, offering a lake, soccer fields, basketball courts, playgrounds, and a regional aquatics center, all connected to the Rio Hondo bike path. The bike path follows the Rio Hondo channel and links Bell Gardens to the broader Los Angeles River trail network, providing a route for cycling and walking away from street traffic. The park's shaded grounds and water features make it a gathering place for families and a centerpiece of outdoor recreation in the community.
